Cincinnati Bengals Inside Slant 2009-07-03
Three months of conditioning workouts, 11 organized team activity sessions and five minicamp practices later, the Bengals feel like they are in better shape.

"I think we've had a really good offseason of work on the field. The 1,000 snaps gives us an opportunity to get through some things on defense and offense," said coach Marvin Lewis after the final practice, which was held at Paul Brown Stadium. "Our team has worked hard to be in shape and play football. The key now is to be in the best conditioned shape going into camp. The will be the first time in a long time we have the chance to go to camp healthy."

The minicamp practices continued a theme of the offseason on-field work - the receivers standing out.

Laveranues Coles made a nice one-handed grab along the right sideline on a 50-yard pass while Andre Caldwell went between three defenders on a middle route. Even Chad Ochocinco gave fans sitting in the end zone a thrill when he beat double coverage on a 30-yard touchdown to complete a two-minute drill.

Ochocinco celebrated by scaling the sideline wall and fell into the front row.

"It's good to see 85 as we know and love him," Lewis said. "He's back to being that guy that every day coming out of the tunnel wants someone to know where he is and come out and cover him."

While Lewis would not specify where he thought the team's progress was - whether they were at or ahead of expectations - the seventh-year coach is pleased of where they are.

"I think we're in really good shape. I don't consider where we're going to be but let's just say I like where we are," Lewis said.

OFFSEASON STANDOUT: Wide receiver Chris Henry has shown both on and off the field that he is ready to return to the form of his first two seasons (2005-06), when he emerged as a deep threat in the offense. Henry was at all of the offseason workouts and has not been in any trouble since he was re-signed by the team last August. Henry got plenty of snaps at the slot receiver spot during OTAs in place of Chad Ochocinco and can play both the inside and outside receiver spots. Even more important is that he has the trust again of quarterback Carson Palmer, who has four viable threats to stretch the field in Ochocinco, Laveranues Coles, Henry and Andre Caldwell.

LINEUP WATCH: Most of the position battles during training camp will be on defense. Tank Johnson and Pat Sims will vie for one of the defensive tackle spots while Chris Crocker, Roy Williams and Chinedum Ndukwe are battling for both safety spots. During minicamp, Johnson lined up with the first team while Williams and Crocker were the starting safeties. While Rey Maualuga is still learning the SAM linebacker spot, he should provide competition with Rashad Jeanty for playing time. On offense, Brian Leonard, Kenny Watson and DeDe Dorsey are jockeying for the backup running back spot while Jeremi Johnson, Fui Vakapuna and Chris Pressley are in a battle at fullback. Kyle Cook appears to have the inside track at center but could get a run from rookie Jonathan Luigs.

ROOKIE IMPRESSIONS: Since being moved to right tackle, first-round pick Andre Smith continues to adjust to the position and appears to be slightly ahead of the learning curve. During the recent minicamp, he held his own and his only mistake came during one of the drills when he jumped offside and had to run a lap. Second-round pick Rey Maualuga appears to still be grasping the points of being a SAM linebacker. Fifth-round pick Kevin Huber is regularly averaging in the 4.5-4.8 second range on punt hang time.

INJURY WATCH: After the final practice of minicamp, coach Marvin Lewis noted that the Bengals should be injury free when training camp begins on July 31. Defensive end Robert Geathers (microfracture surgery) and cornerbacks Marvin White (ACL) and Morgan Trent (foot) did not take part in drills, but will be ready for camp. Center Dan Santucci (foot) got injured during minicamp, but it was nothing long term.

CONTRACT TO WATCH: Last year Keith Rivers was the next-to-last first-round pick to agree to terms. This year Andre Smith is the early favorite to be the longest holdout, with the switch back to Alvin Keels as his agent and with the $50 million deal last year at six that the Jets gave Vernon Gholston. The Bengals appear not to be ready to offer $50 million to Smith and are looking more at $35-40 million. Where the number settles all depends on what the Raiders do with wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, but Oakland can be just as intransigent with draft picks as the Bengals, so it could be awhile before the range comes more into focus.
