Cincinnati Bengals Strategy and Personnel 2009-09-30PLAYER NOTES

--LB Rey Maualuga is getting more tests on his left knee and might have a sprained MCL. Maualuga was limping around during the open locker room on Monday.

--DT Tank Johnson missed some of the second half due to an injury to his right foot and might be limited this week in practice.

--FS Chinedum Ndukwe suffered a leg injury during the second half. His status for practice this week remains unknown.

--RB Cedric Benson, who had 76 yards on 16 carries in the win over Pittsburgh, looks to be fully recovered from a foot injury suffered against Green Bay.

--CB David Jones (foot) and OT Nate Livings (knee), who missed the Pittsburgh game, should be able to practice this week. Both were limited last week.

REPORT CARD VS. STEELERS

PASSING OFFENSE: C-plus - There's no doubt what Carson Palmer and the offense can do during the fourth quarter, but it's the first three quarters that remain a question. Unlike the Denver game, where Palmer was victimized by dropped passes, he had his share of bad throws against the Steelers where balls sailed or were too low. Chad Ochocinco had a couple passes he should've caught on the last drive.

RUSHING OFFENSE: B-minus - After being bottled up in the first half, Cedric Benson had 58 of his 76 yards in the second half, including a 23-yard run around left tackle. Benson also got a lot of yards in the middle this time, benefiting from some large openings.

PASS DEFENSE: C - The Bengals got some pressure on Ben Roethlisberger, but were able to bring him down only once. The secondary did not do a good job maintaining coverage on routes while LB Rey Maualuga had a bad error abandoning coverage on a Willie Parker dumpoff screen that led to a touchdown.

RUSH DEFENSE: B-minus - They didn't do a good job in the first half, but it was the defense's ability to contain Parker in the second half that started slowly turning the game in the Bengals' favor. The defense was able to get penetration on the offensive line and get to Parker in the backfield.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C - An inconsistent day from Kevin Huber along with another bad snap by Brad St. Louis, his second in three games. While Andre Caldwell had a return into Pittsburgh territory on the opening kickoff, the kick return team is not generating much consistently in the way of field position.

COACHING: B - Even with the Bengals trailing 13-0, the coaching staff remained calm and reminded the team that they were able to almost pull out the game against Denver despite lousy play the first 54 minutes. Also give credit to offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer for some key halftime adjustments.
