Coach Marvin Lewis, who normally does not applaud his players individually, mentioned four by name when asked if there were any pleasant surprises in minicamp. Lewis said rookie free-agent tailback James Johnson of Kansas State "has done a nice job."
"Great for (cornerback) David Jones," Lewis said of the player signed off waivers last season from New Orleans. Jones could challenge Deltha O'Neal for the third cornerback job.
Lewis also was happy with the work of wide receiver Marcus Maxwell. And Lewis said linebacker Brandon Johnson "impressed me a lot. ... I'm excited to put pads on."
