The Rams will pay tribute - some would contend long overdue - to Hall of Fame defensive end David "Deacon" Jones by retiring his No. 75.
Jones played for the Rams from 1961 to 1971 and later played for the Chargers and Redskins. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980.
A spokesman for the Rams said the date of the ceremony would be announced later.
St. Louis Rams fans unfamiliar with the team's history in Los Angeles could use a refresher course on Jones, 71, who is credited with coining the term "sack the quarterback." Unofficially, he racked up 159.5 sacks with the Rams , 173.5 in his career. He also was nicknamed Secretary of Defense and through the most productive years of his career, teamed with Merlin Olsen, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier to comprise the defensive line known as the Fearsome Foursome.
Jones' other achievements include:
- First defensive lineman to record 100 solo tackles in a single season, 1967.
- NFL defensive player of the year, 1967 and 1968.
- Nine-time Pro Bowler.
- Member of the NFL's All-Decade team in the 1960s.
- Member of the NFL's 75th anniversary team in 1994.
Jones will be the seventh member of the Rams to have his number retired. The others are: 7: Bob Waterfield 28: Marshall Faulk 29: Eric Dickerson 74: Merlin Olsen 78: Jackie Slater 85: Jack Youngblood With the exception of Waterfield, who played with the Rams from 1945 to 1952, the others left the organization after Jones.
